What do you do when you are involved in a crash?

It seems typical to believe you are a better driver than your friends and family members. And you probably adhere to the posted speed limit, find a designated driver for your nights out on the town and maintain a safe following distance during inclement weather.

The problem is that no matter how careful you are behind the wheel, you cannot trust that other drivers focus their full attention on the road. So, in an instance where you are unable to avoid an accident, you may not know what to do.

Seven things you need to do following a motor vehicle accident

When you are on the road, safety is always paramount. Due to the chaos that can surround an accident scene, be cautious about getting out of your vehicle to check for damage, exchange information or wait for help to arrive.

As you evaluate your situation and take the necessary steps after an accident, you must always keep your safety in mind. After your involvement in a crash:

· Report the incident to the police

· Check yourself and your passengers for injuries

· Exchange insurance information with the other driver involved

· Collect information from witnesses and take photos of your injuries and damage to your vehicle

· Stay at the scene of the accident until the police give you the approval to leave

· Seek medical attention even if you do not have apparent injuries

· Refrain from admitting fault to the other driver's insurance company or posting about the accident on social media

Many accidents are minor and may not lead to physical or financial strain. However, if you suffer injuries due to the negligence of another driver, you may want to take action.
